Haunted Castle Cake

An abandoned castle with broken-down shutters, jumbled tombstones, gnarly trees and a murky moat—what a spooktacular centrepiece for a Halloween party! Your young ghosties and ghoulies will have a howling good time creating this eerie dessert made of cake mix, icing and a whole loot bag full of treats. A monstrously good way to have your cake—and eat it too!

SUPPORT BASE
You will need:
21 x 17 inch (52.5 x 42.5 cm) piece of foam board; 1 large sheet of brown or green construction paper; tape or glue; aluminum foil

Cover one side of the foam board with construction paper. Secure with tape or glue. Cut a sheet of foil into a 12 x 14 inch (30 x 35 cm) rectangle. Secure the foil with tape or glue to the centre of the foam board, leaving a 1/2 inch (12 mm) edge all around. Fold up the edges of the foil to form sides. Pinch the corners to form right angles.
 
CAKE
Boxes of golden cake mix (2 layer size)33
 
ICING
Icing sugar7 1/2 cups1.9 L
Hard margarine (or butter), melted3/4 cup175 mL
Milk1/2 cup125 mL
Black paste food colouring*
 
Cake: Prepare cakes according to package directions, using 9 x 13 inch (22 x 33 cm) pan for each. Cool cakes completely. Cut 2 inches (5 cm) from one short side of each cake, creating three 9 x 11 inch (22 x 28 cm) cakes. Cut trimmed ends into 1 1/2 inch (3.8 cm) cubes.**

Icing: Combine first 3 ingredients in large bowl. Beat on medium speed with electric mixer until smooth. Add food colouring, a bit at a time, until icing is a dark grey colour. Place one cake in centre of foil on board. Spread icing over top of cake with spatula. Place second cake on top. Spread icing over top. Place third cake on top. Spread icing over top and sides of entire cake. You will have icing left over for decorating. Serves 36.
