Lasagna      "Lasagna" is available in PDF format print friendly version

This delicious lasagna is extra meaty. Serve with garlic toast.
Cooking oil1 tbsp.15 mL
Lean ground beef2 lbs.900 g
Chopped onion1 1/4 cups300 mL
Garlic clove, minced (or 1/4 tsp., 1 mL,1/4 tsp.1 mL
Water2 cups500 mL
Can of tomato sauce14 oz.398 mL
Can of sliced mushrooms, drained10 oz.284 mL
Can of tomato paste5 1/2 oz.156 mL
Granulated sugar1 tsp.5 mL
Dried oregano1/2 tsp.2 mL
Salt2 tsp.10 mL
Pepper1/4 tsp.1 mL
Lasagna noodles1212
2% cottage cheese2 cups500 mL
Grated mozzarella cheese4 cups1 L
Grated Parmesan cheese1/2 cup125 mL
Meat Sauce: Heat cooking oil in large frying pan or Dutch oven on medium-high. Add next 3 ingredients. Scramble-fry for about 10 minutes until beef is no longer pink. Drain.

Add next 8 ingredients. Stir. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Makes about 7 cups (1.75 L) sauce.

Cook noodles in boiling salted water in uncovered Dutch oven for 12 to 14 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender but firm. Drain. Rinse with cold water. Drain.

Layer ingredients in greased 9 x 13 inch (22 x 33 cm) pan as follows:
1. 1 cup (250 mL) meat sauce
2. 4 lasagna noodles
3. Cottage cheese
4. 2 cups (500 mL) mozzarella cheese
5. 2 cups (500 mL) meat sauce
6. 4 lasagna noodles
7. 2 cups (500 mL) meat sauce
8. 4 lasagna noodles
9. 2 cups (500 mL) meat sauce
10. 2 cups (500 mL) mozzarella cheese
11. Parmesan cheese

Bake, uncovered, in 350°F (175°C) oven for 45 to 55 minutes until heated through. Cover loosely with greased foil if cheese starts to brown too quickly. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving. Serves 8.
