Onion Walnut Biscuits

Golden drop biscuits with the sweetness of caramelized onions, the fragrance of fresh rosemary and the crunch of walnuts.
 
Butter (or hard margarine)2 tbsp.30 mL
Thinly sliced onion2 cups500 mL
 
Brown sugar, packed2 tbsp.30 mL
Salt1/4 tsp.1 mL
 
All-purpose flour2 cups500 mL
Baking powder1 tbsp.15 mL
Salt1/4 tsp.1 mL
Walnut pieces, toasted3/4 cup175 mL
Finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves 1 tsp.5 mL
Pepper1/4 tsp.1 mL
 
Milk2/3 cup150 mL
Sour cream1/2 cup125 mL
Large egg11
 
Melt butter in large frying pan on medium-low. Add onion. Cook for about 20 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden.

Add brown sugar and first amount of salt. Stir until brown sugar is dissolved. Set aside.

Combine next 6 ingredients in large bowl. Stir until walnuts are coated. Make a well in centre.

Beat milk, sour cream and egg with fork in small bowl. Add to well. Add onion mixture. Stir until very soft, sticky dough forms. Drop by 1/4 cup (60 mL) amounts, about 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) apart, onto greased 11 x 17 inch (28 x 43 cm) baking sheet. Bake on top rack in 450°F (230°C) oven for about 15 minutes until bottoms are golden. Let stand on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to wire rack to cool. Serve warm. Makes 12 biscuits.
